This is the bugman's idea of simplifying his life - buy a second, less useful device because he lacks the will to control his use of the first.

for a hundred and twenty five dollars. Pretty sure you can still buy flip phones for less than that as burners.

Yes, you can get a hard to break, slow to die device for 19.99-29.99 , but why get something practical when you can send out bugman virtue signals by spending four times this amount on a "stylish" effete gadget?

Yeah and their white slab grandmaphone doesn't even have "retro" cred.

Let's nail this down. A bugman is a city dweller who looks insectoid and dwells in small cramped spaces, what, like nano-micro capsule homes? And he buys mechanical keyboards. Does he like living in squalid conditions or is he really tidy? Would a bugman be ok with a few houseflies in the room? Can he live like that? Is he ok with visual clutter? Does he shun the great outdoors? Would a bugman have a dog or are they wary?

Bugmen are more bugmen not for any particular physical characteristics, mode of living, or political ideals (though these all help at identification), they are bugmen because they do not really have souls (hence small-souled). There is always an element to them which feels unreal or off because they intrinsically cannot understand and experience what it truly means to be human. They understand love as either chemical reactions or economic decisions. Spirituality is little more than a nagging feeling at the back of his mind that he will die, which is why so many of them want to be turned into computers (they would rather become a machine than die). He considers anything that is not directly solely towards increasing human "progress" as unwelcome at best and something to be eradicated at worst. He is a bugman because the society in which he would thrive the most (and indeed, wishes to bring into being) is one that would function much like a termite or ant colony. Many of them would go further still and I think their ultimate goal would be to convert the entire human race into machines with counters representing "utility" that do nothing but tick upwards endlessly for the rest of time - the most efficient way for us to experience maximum pleasure with the fewest resources.

The bugman is a man that wants to remove their humanity, to reduce their soul and humanity to something less, yet at the same time thinking they are actually ascending and becoming something greater.

Yes, brand yourselves with the mascot of the latest iteration of a bloated film franchise, take a pic with all of the 'merch' you've accumulated because nerd consumerism is just so quirky but they're also being ironic, they are in on their own joke you see so that makes it alright.

Didn't the trailer featuring this misshapen rodent only come out a couple of days ago? How have they already accumulated so much of this garbage?

How is it different than other basic phones?
The Light Phone is the only phone that is designed to be used as a second phone. We have a unique software platform that makes the call management & call forwarding seamless in a way that no other phone can offer. The form factor makes it fit invisibly into your life, and the interface respects the user in its simplicity. It makes disconnecting feel special. Unlike a basic flip phone, you cannot text, email or anything else really. It is the most simple phone and a complement to your existing smartphone. The Light Phone, although incredibly simple, is actually running a stripped down version of Android and is quite a smart "dumb" phone which will allow us to continue to perfect the light experience with a roadmap of features.
