The day before, I entered Terminal 5 at JFK with my Tumi in tow, making my way toward the security line, and pulled out my iPhone X to show the agent my boarding pass. Once through, I walked over to the one nameless restaurant serving breakfast and sat down. I began to text my fiancée, who was back at our apartment. I asked if she had woken up yet, how she slept. She sent me back a picture of Clementine, her towheaded two-year-old niece, that her sister had uploaded into their shared album (to which I had not yet earned an invitation). I ate my breakfast, checked my email, and stood up to head to my gate. As I did, I looked down at the small section of my life situated at that airport dining table: my new Nike Air Max sneakers, my cashmere swacket (that’s 50% jacket, 50% sweater, 100% cozy), my almost-too-soft-to-be-taken-outside leather duffel bag, and my iPhone. All of these objects were central to me – I felt like they defined me – and it was my iPhone that was at the core of it. I had used it to call the car to get to the airport, to enter the security line, to communicate with my soon-to-be wife. And then I realized that at one point, this object existed solely in the mind of the man with whom I would spend 60 minutes the following day.

I boarded my flight and took out my laptop to continue my pre-reporting – a MacBook Pro. This second device, another central to my existence, was again the work of Jony Ive. The headphones on which I listened to Drake’s 2010 album Thank Me Later for the 334th time to drown out the drone of the too-long-by-at-least-two-hours flight to San Francisco were again conceived by Jony Ive.

The following day, I drove my Turo’d BMW (booked on my iPhone) down to Cupertino, and after finding seemingly the only restaurant not serving Korean food within three miles of Apple’s new $5 billion spaceship/office park, I made my way onto North Tantau Avenue. As I did, I pulled out my iPhone yet again and said, “Hey Siri, what is Apple’s market cap today?”

“The market cap for Apple is 849 billion.”

“Fuck.” I said aloud. Then paused. “Jesus.”

Apple's early to mid 2000s marketing anticipated and defined bugworld's outer carapace: anodyne, sleek and sans-serif.

They are so in denial of human biology, in this case eye development, that they (from bugman field observation on my part) actually deny that young kids needing glasses is a significant impairment caused by too much screen time. It's so cute putting problem glasses on two-year-old Noah!

It's caused by sitting inside in lights with less than 20,000 lux (which is about the same strength as sunlight outside), 20,000 lux activates some dopamine reaction in the eyes. In some bughive countries/areas in South Asia, 95%+ of children are myopic. The answer would be to give the children more time outside, but bugmen are already working on advocating for 20,000 lux lamps. Screen time/reading time itself doesn't affect myopia that much as long as children are outside a few hours every day. I can't remember if sitting inside during the winter affects this, but I do recall some scientists studying this in Canada and Northern European.

http://biology.anu.e...-southeast-asia

Quote

Secondly, although myopia was described as genetic, the prevalence of myopia in the developed countries of East and Southeast Asia had increased from about 10-30% to 80-90% in young adults. This didn’t make sense to Ian Morgan, because gene pools can’t change that fast. Thirdly, while most myopia is easy to correct, high myopia of -6D or worse, in which objects appear blurred when they are 16cm or more away, leads to pathological changes in the retina and potentially severe visual impairment, which cannot be corrected or prevented with glasses. Ian Morgan decided to address this important problem, through the use of animal models, and together with colleagues at the University of Sydney, initiated the Sydney Myopia Study.

In 2005, the group published a review arguing that the prevalence of myopia was increasing so fast that environmental/social factors had to be involved, and in 2008 the group showed that children who spent more time outdoors were less likely to become myopic. This was confirmed by comparing children of Chinese ancestry growing up in Australia and Singapore. The two groups had vastly different prevalence of myopia (3% in Australia compared to 27% in Singapore at the age of 6) and the children in Singapore reported less than one quarter of the time outdoors reported by those in Australia.

And of course study after study show that educational intervention in very young children (age 7 and earlier) doesn't help jackshit after a few years and the small education advantage in age 8-10 that children who go to school have over children who don't also disappears at about age 14-16.
