Excellent clarity on bugmen in this thread; I can't add to that, but I have a question: Why do people follow them? Elevate them to high positions? I can't believe it's just the idea that people want to be bugmen themselves on some level; they know what that approach to life means and don't want to pursue anything that distasteful. Is it as simple as: They don't recognize the tendency in themselves? Does the ideology of the bugmen outweigh the repulsiveness? What's going on?

To BA's question, I would assume bugmen don't start out that way. The bugman state is the post-metamorphosis state of a goon or faggotstriver.

i agree with this.  craven striver types are far more susceptible to 'morph.' the bugman lacks roots or spirituality, so he looks to the neoliberal cathedral to define is mores and consumer preferences.  he finds cosmic justice in the corporate skinner box, where employees are encouraged to take on mortgages, CC debt so they are motivated to meet sales goals and performance targets.

what separates the bugman from the pack is that he is totally in simpatico with this system, and doesn't seem conscious of how out of balance it is.  he is elevated in society because of his clearly defined utility curve and transparent motivations, which make him easy to manage, predict, and control.  the managerial class desperately wants to believe every situation in society can be brought to heel by a mckinsey consulting model, and they are excited by people who fit into their molds.

Aldous Huxley had a bit to say on the bugmen:

Quote

“The real hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be most normal. Many of them are normal because they are so well adjusted to our mode of existence, because their human voice has been silenced so early in their lives, that they do not even struggle or suffer or develop symptoms as the neurotic does. They are normal not in what may be called the absolute sense of the word; they are normal only in relation to a profoundly abnormal society. Their perfect adjustment to that abnormal society is a measure of their mental sickness. These millions of abnormally normal people, living without fuss in a society to which, if they were fully human beings, they ought not to be adjusted.”

The asians I would say are not usually bugmen (the ones in Asia I mean ... plenty of chinks here are) ... I think when ur talking about asians you want "ant-like". But i actually think the "bugman" idea wouldn't even apply to all bugs (bees, ants and spiders are 3 I think rise above the level of the bugman and I think when people call asians that it's really bees or ants there hinkibg of most)

But the "bugman" isn't as simple as "bug-like". It is "bugman" not "bug man" (e.g. An "airplane" NOT "air plane" .... is not "air" )

For you the German speakers - this is a good example of why you put words together to make new ones (eg , in German "weltan" (world) + "schuuang" (view) combines to make "weltanschuuang" which is a much more deeper meaning than just the two parts (its an entire concept entire books have written).

Now that I think of it: I think Im going to spell it "bugmann" to pay tribute to the German language ..... they often make combined words ending in man (e.g. "Stormtrooper is "sturmmann" )

The bugman is basically the things about a bug that make it a bug but applied to a man

what is the overlap between bugmen and autism? are they non-humanoid entities designed and released by focus groups into the general public or are they merely on the spectrum?

"small-souled bugman" implies that the person has been cut off from their cultural roots, and totally subsumed into consumerist neoliberal hive.  they are totally lack any sort of sympathy for their ancestors folkways, higher spirituality, or passion.  if they do engage in activities that are somewhat human, they still are heavily tinged by global capitalism.

You see a lot of these bugmen in urban areas, where people trying to escape the corporate grind instead become willful shills of corporate interests in their own niche industries, which then justifies their autistic consumerist purity tests:

"Well I have to obsess over my camera gear and sponsorships, I'm an up-and-coming content creator!"

"Well I have to binge watch this new on-demand series, I'm a cultural critic!"

"Well I have to pay $75 for this shot of whiskey, I'm a mixologist!"

And for the enterprising bugwoman:

"Well I have to obsess over social media, I'm a lifestyle consultant!"

"Well I have to engage in reckless promiscuity, I'm a sex blogger (DAD)!"

The list goes on :hardship:

It's funny: when I was growing up I always experienced a strange sinking feeling while consuming typical middle-class kwan culture: newspapers, movies, TV, etc. It couldn't have been due to any overt political agenda because I would have agreed with it back then even if I'd recognized it. Now I know that that feeling was in fact my soul growing smaller and all my dreams and desires slowly conforming to that of the bugman. Good thing I got out when I could -- some never do.

I think that might help explain how these people come to be. It's an adult extension of adolescent adherence to garbage culture -- that is, garbage both in terms of cultural artifacts and cultural values. These people don't realize, unfortunately, that something's wrong; they assume instead that what they need is more garbage culture. And that's exactly what they get, in the form of consumerist fetishes and neoliberal inanities. It really is sad (no, it's sad!) because how else are average people supposed to realize that the hegemonic assumptions of our culture are in fact the problem? Certainly their normie parents won't tell them; certainly they've done everything right according to the tenets of the culture. And yet at the end of the day they come home from work and no matter what they do they are still bugmen.

the small-souled bugman promotes awareness about climate change and praises exponential, unidirectional growth. he stands up for the rights of oppressed women and "sex workers" and torrents HD POV ultra-close-up pornography. he corners VCs at TED Talks to tell them about his drone delivery app and doesn't know how to talk to a mechanic.

he tweets safe opinions under his full name. he vapes artisinal medicinal cannabis, gazes at jpegs of nebulas and ponders the wonders of the universe.
he scoffs at miracles and strives to be the most rational, the most right, the most ahead. he never watches things grow and never watches things die.
