I see a major role for antitrust as the next step in trump taking the media to the mat. As many in this forum have pointed out many times, media outlets are mostly part of major corporate conglomerates and serve to advance the interests of other such entities. Growth is the god of these institutions and so they love mass immigration, internationalism, annihilation of traditional communities/values, anything that goes towards a brazilified blade runner hellscape of endless consumption. This perspective informs virtually everything they put out there, certainly informs their hatred of and collusion against trump.

Trump's endless trolling should be paired with a concrete effort to decentralize power of these institutions, otherwise a successor could just roll things back to where they were. Antitrust seems like a viable and politically popular way to do this--hopefully bannon/sessions are looking into it.

Journalism also over credentialised itself and assumed status it never deserved.  When I was in school, journalism was considered a lot less prestigious than any other stock standard humanities degree-- what you took when you couldn't even hack an English major.  And don't even start me on 'Communications Studies' which was tard level stuff the scholarshit afletes all signed up for.  Then it got all glammed up and the flood dykes opened.  Zillions of useless journo majors now wait tables and pray for social media coordinator gigs.

That status is suffocating itself too.  No one ever leaves.  They just shift over to some other platform.  Was anyone else struck by the wheezing ancients on Election Night?  Brokaw?  Charlie Rose?  Cokie Roberts?  et al  There must have been a corp of male nurses on hand to wipe the dribble from their faces during ad breaks.  And then the cohort of mystery meats like Van Jones?  And the angry cat lady types?  White, middle aged, vigorous male anchors used to visually define conventional establishment wisdom.  Regardless of their politics, guys like Cronkite, Mudd, Chancellor, Brinkley, Reasoner-- you listened to them because you had an implicit respect in their world view.

That's all gone now.  Cenk is the best case 'future' for the lefty end of the media spectrum.

Not to say Alex Jones is the answer either.  We seem to be reverting to a user sourced model, comprised of a core of self selected independent sources.  They may be uneven, whacky or insane but that's what the media forced us to do.  In a way, I suspect (some) people like this yum cha media diet.  The MSM whining about the future of media is as resonant as the whip & buggy crowd saying we'll miss them when they're gone.  Not so much.

Trump's win must have prevented a fatal alignment in American media.

During the election, the echo-chamber tendency peaked. It became pathological. Only the FRENCH media is more extreme. It will be good to have a US Pres. who can hit deliver hammer blows to the press regularly.

I'm reminded by a clip I once saw,

Politico writer likes French journalism and dislikes "objectivity" (from after the Hebdo massacre).

The decision was made to monitor the statement to see how much damage it was going to do to our remaining shreds of credibility, then work out how to game the current journalistic system to spin it. Damage control, basically. It's what (((we))) do. Did I mention I used to work for NYT? Pretty sure that would be good to know.

Oh and that whole crowd size controversy lol of course we cropped the picture and used pictures from different times of the two inaugurations to big up Obama and demean Trump.

...what do you mean, 'this is the sort of crap that started the Shoah..?'

A top aide to President Trump said on Sunday that the new administration is going to “rethink” its relationship with the press.

"Chuck, if we're going to keep referring to our press secretary in those types of terms, I think we're going to have to rethink our relationship here," Kellyanne Conway said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” after host Chuck Todd asked about press secretary Sean Spicer’s criticism of the press one day earlier.

Spicer in his first official appearance in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room denounced news organizations’ focus on the inaugural crowd size as “shameful and wrong" and took no questions from the press.

"This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period, both in person and around the globe,” Spicer said.

Conway said Sunday that Spicer provided the press with "alternative facts" about the crowd size during the briefing.

But Todd pushed back against Conway, saying alternative facts are falsehoods.

Spicer in the briefing also targeted a Time magazine reporter who mistakenly wrote in a pool report that a bust of Martin Luther King Jr. had been removed from the Oval Office.

Conway cited the reporter's mistake as a falsehood.

"Rethink our relationship".

I still don't like Kellyanne Cockroach, too cucked in her past, but as a messenger for the thoughts of Trump and herald of the mighty god-king it seems certain Trump will inflict seismic change on the journalists. Destroying their comfort zone seems assured; some sort of change to their credentialist lifestyle seems equally sure. Beyond that, it's tea leaf reading stuff at the moment but with Trump opening up the function of the trickle-down media whore class to other people, so as to make the job functionally closer to full congruency with the original notion of a "free press" - not a good time for the J School set.

The silly revanchist attitude of the press is not going to help their cause either because they have no popular support. We probably forget or are unaware how often the hard left and even the cat ladies see the press as RIGHT wing stooges and warmongers - they are not well liked by any sector of the population.

Cause of death: irrelevancy

Quote

The White House Correspondents dinner, aka “the nerd prom,” may be in trouble. The New York Times reports that both Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, two Conde Nast publications, have pulled out of their annual parties. VF editor in chief Graydon Carter, no fan of Donald Trump, says he’s going fishing that weekend.

Then there’s the satirical Not the WHCD being planned by the very funny comedian Samantha Bee and sponsored by her network, which is owned by Turner Communications, part of Time Warner. When Bee announced this last week it sounded hilarious at least on paper. But it also depended on people of note coming to Washington.

The White House Correspondents Association announced on Twitter a couple of days they were going ahead with the dinner. But I’m not sure that’s such a good idea given that no one is laughing, no one wants Trump at the dinner, and the result of a broadcast in which a comedian host just rags on Trump could really backfire on the journalism community. This may not be the time for a roast.

The last time these insipid vacuous insects accosted Trump, it propelled him into the White House.

Also, what makes them think Trump would even turn up?

Quote

There’s also a question of what the WHCA really is. According to their Form 990 filing for 2015, the not for profit group had $330,000 in expenses in 2015. Nearly half of that money–about $145,000– went to their president, Julia Whitson, in salary. Only $86,550 went to grants to individuals like journalism students. Indeed gifts, grants and other monies received have declined sharply from $293,189 in 2010 to $63,420 in 2014. They claim total net assets of $602,550 for 2015.

(((monies received have declined sharply)))

Not enough gifts and grants!

(and such small portions)

And oh hey that #501c3 thing? That would apply here too.

How the f**k do you need a president for organizing a once a year dinner? It's the same s**t every year. Just repeat the same thing you did the year before, will take a week max.

Lots of 180 in this thread.

What still absolutely shocks me is that the same journalists who will bitch about their lack of esteem and how Trump is subverting the First Amendment by not sittings still patiently while they wind up to punch him can't discipline themselves enough to stay the f**k off twitter.

You'd think that would be the first thing you would do to wrap your denials of bias in some sort of plausible deniability. (Well, you might also have avoided being wed to Democratic political operatives and columnists for Mother Jones). Instead they make a record that they follow and retweet @LOLGOP and Amynda Marcotte, and then tweet their own partisan and issue advocacy for hours a day.
