The Ukraine War is hard to take seriously.  It has a kind of comic-book, Deliverance meets Mad-Max quality.  A pointless, sordid skirmish in the radioactive boondocks of Western Civilization, pitting the League of Rabid Madmen versus the Neo-Confederacy of Devolved Subhumans.
Posted Image

As a result, the war hasn't been taken as seriously as it deserves, except by neo-con fanatics and Russophiles with an axe to grind.  Anyone interested in 70+ pages of mindless cheerleading for the courageous Freedom Fighters of the Ukraine-or the Orthodox Saints of New Russia-can look elsewhere:

This is an attempt to cut through the propaganda and understand what really happened in the Ukraine.  Critiques and comments welcome.

Part 1-Ukraine Before the War
Posted Image
Around half of Ukraine's wealth is in the hands of just 50 people.  Given the number of their privileged employees, cronies and bagmen who must also be fed, this leaves most Ukrainians with next to nothing.  The Ukie standard of living fell sharply since the fall of the USSR, and unlike the rest of EastEurope it hasn't improved since.
Posted Image
The main reason behind this spectacular failure was an informal bargain made shortly after the fall of the USSR.  Ukraine's government would henceforth be run by Stalinist troglodytes from Russian East Ukraine (backed by Moscow).  Meanwhile, the local oligarchs could steal whatever they wanted, provided they paid protection money and didn't rock the boat.  This unique arrangement gave Ukraine the very worst of both worlds-authoritarian kleptocracy-earning the coveted World's Worst Country Still Populated Entirely By White People Award. The educated and young people of any ambition simply left; the Ukraine also became a kind of Thailand of the West, exporting attractive, nubile women willing to marry fat, aging western businessmen just for the chance at escaping a hopeless country.
Posted Image

So despite their wealth, the oligarchs found themselves stuck on a sinking ship-a failing economy and abject dependence on Russia.  Tired of having to kowtow to Putin and the local Russian gangsters, the oligarchs decided to exert direct control over 'their' country.  After several failed attempts, they finally succeeded.  The key was to win over the formerly cynical and apathetic masses.  Some of this involved whipping up Western Ukrainian nationalism; i.e. jealousy over the lion's share of government sinecure/bribe station positions held by the Russian-speaking mafia.  More importantly, they just told people a pack of lies:
Posted Image
Once we join the EU, those policemen who tortured you will walk your dog and babysit your kids!
Posted Image
Once we join the EU, you will won't have to pick potatoes to survive anymore, and can spend your retirement eating pastries in Paris!
Back in reality, of course, the EU is on the ropes and has no desire whatsoever to absorb yet another EastEuro basket case, let alone pay massive subsidies to the Ukraine to raise their standard of living.  But hopeful of miraculously becoming a wealthy country, fed up with the Donbass Mafia, and egged on by the oligarchs, the people took to the streets and overthrew the government; a suitable figure-head was rapidly anointed.  Now all that was left was to fend off the inevitable Russian reaction-with a little help from their friends:

Lol are the dems really going to run that jowly dike kook in 2016?

Great post. The American "house of cards" pack will doubtless be a great asset to the cause of Ukrainian peasant improvement. How soon until we award them section 8 housing vouchers, food stamps, and gender renormalization for kissing  our rings?

Also a Russian cab driver brought up this topic with me today. He firmly believes Russia has nothing to do with the separatists and that putin wasn't funding them. People believe lies because they want to.

Why is Hillary balding in front? It can't be anavar because, well look at her. I'm impressed by that Ukrainian goddess' ability to not look totally creeped out by crazy aging predatory lesbian wistfully shaking hands with her.

Part 2: Putin and the Art of War
Posted Image

Quote

The supreme art of war is to win without fighting.
The most important phase of the Ukrainian war took less than a month.  Russian troops simply fanned out across the Crimea.  Half the Ukrainian troops went over to the Russians; the rest barely put up token resistance, then went home.  Barely firing a shot, the Russians had captured the most valuable part of the Ukraine, by far.  Crimea was the buried jackpot in the otherwise busted-out Oligarch Casino that was the Ukraine.  An easily defensible location, a major naval base, huge untapped reserves of oil and gas; and a pro-Russian population that voted to exit the sinking Ukrainian ship.

The highest form of generalship is to attack the enemy's plans.  Next to attack the enemy's alliances.
With the Crimea went the Pentagon's interest, as well as the EU/oil biz dream of a new, major energy source outside Russian control.  It was Crimea, mainly, that led to US and EU (more tepidly) to get involved in Ukraine in the first place.  Letting Crimea go undefended was the first great mistake the Oligarchs made...though not the last.  It wasn't simply a matter of stupidity or oversight.  The Ukrainians have a strong colonial mentality, and were afraid to engage the Russians.  They also assumed that once in power, they would be invincible.  Their new masters would fight or bargain for them.

Also, it's possible that certain American politicians had made extravagant promises about defending the Ukraine, promises that they weren't ready, or able, to keep.
Posted Image
Putin, not always diplomatic, had been even more abrasive than usual in recent times, calling Kerry a liar (correctly) and not bothering to hide his contempt for key American politicans.

Quote

If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant.

Had the Ukies bothered to put up a fight, they probably could have arranged for some type of international arbitration.  As it was, they simply gave away their most valuable province, without even a tip to show for it.  International law?  Given that little Israel violates international law twice a day without consequences (and the US around once a year), it's doubtful that Russia has much to worry about-except for those horrible, dreaded, 'crippling' sanctions.

The Castro Brothers, suffering under crippling American sanctions for half a century
With the Crimea went the more serious Western advisors and businessmen, and the more responsible Ukrainian politicians.  More angry, aggressive voices now came to the fore.  Less interested in the Ukraine itself, their primary goal was to make Russia-and Putin-suffer.  While extremely brave, intelligent and self-sacrificing individuals (as they will tell you themselves), they preferred to make war from the comfort of offices and TV studios, letting Ukrainian conscripts have the glory of fighting (and dying) for freedom.

(A Footnote)

More angry, aggressive voices now came to the fore....While extremely brave, intelligent and self-sacrificing individuals (as they will tell you themselves), they preferred to make war from the comfort of offices and TV studios.[1]

[1]Though hailing from many different countries, and having no particular connection to each other, they seemed to share the same beliefs, the same goals, the same passions, at times even the same appearance.  It was as if they were related by some quasi-religious bond, or brotherhood.  Despite this, nearly all were atheists, and they seemed indifferent-nay, even scornful-about their countries of origin.  Perhaps they were of extraterrestrial origin...?
