Contrary to the content of the above tweet, Shanley Kane does not want to be left alone. As a 'tech feminism' activist, Shanley's stated goal is the "unconditional and total dismantling of the white male patriarchy"

OK, so this is the usual radical feminist rhetoric that we've all heard before. Why bother making a thread about this particular person when there are countless other malcontents frothing at the laptop on twitter? Well, there are a few reasons.

Number one: Shanley has managed to establish herself as one of the more prominent members of the 'tech feminism' movement. She has over 10,000 sycophantic twitter followers herself, but her real reach is on display when some even bigger shitlib like Anil Dash retweets her to half a million or so. Twitter users call this technique 'amplifying a signal' and sometime will request it when they want to get their message to a broader audience (usually to demand that someone be fired). As such, she attracts notice and will appear in the press from time to time. In some ways she's the face of tech feminism (and trust me, you really don't want to see some of the others).

Number two: Shanley is prone to hilarious, childish meltdowns of epic proportions. These usually follow a pattern where some male engineer makes some sort of un-PC comment and she'll quickly escalate it to risible, histrionic claims and characterizations of the entire industry. Like this:

So, in other words, she uses incendiary language combined with gross generalizations to setup a giant trap for any well-meaning but misguided nerd who wants to challenge her or just get 'educated' on why she feels that way. Here's a typical exchange:

That's when the real fun starts to happen. Her fans begin chiming in and echo her abusive language towards these poor saps:

Anyhow, you get the point. It's like a food fight in the cafeteria, except the cafeteria is full of hundreds of thousands of nerds and the ammunition is hashtags.

At the end of the day, twitter followers are won and lost, alliances are formed and broken, and the blocks keep rolling in. Some egos are bruised, but life carries on.

That's not the REAL fun though, which is getting an opponent fired! I'll cover that in a subsequent post. In the meantime, I'm going to post some of Shanley's greatest hits for your enjoyment.

For those of you who weren't in chat, Shanley had a meltdown because a reporter writing a profile about her asked uncomfortable questions and attempted to get in touch with friends and family -- basically, just doing what reporters do.

In her reaction, she goes on and on about "boundaries" -- boundaries like "don't ask me questions I don't like" or "only interview the people I want you to interview." WTF? This bitch's entire job is humiliating and calling people out on twitter, harassing people she doesn't agree with and trying to ruin their careers.

LEAVE ME THE f**k ALONE. AND STOP WRITING ABOUT ME. How many of Shanley's (cishet white male oppressor) victims have thought the same thing?

The expression is signal boosting, and it comes from tumblr where those social justice freak communities often originate.

Speaking of firing people. Shanley just got someone fired for calling her a cunt.

Using that kind of language (in general, but particularly in a public, online forum such as Twitter) is offensive, inexcusable, and basically stupid. My guess is that Ash realized this when he deleted the tweet.

Ash also apologized publicly to Shanley and Ashe Dryden (also mentioned in the offending tweet), even after Livestream fired him.

Never apologize.

Yeah it's funny that she's basically bullying these poor nerds in the way that girls bully. I wonder if she recognizes this on any level? Do people like this engage in any meta-cognition or introspection? She's raging so hard on these goobers but claims she is the victim. She talks about boundaries but I can't imagine she ever had many as a child, or she'd be more respectful of others today.

You have to wonder, as a journalist, how would Shanley not be familiar with the standards of journalism that would allow Elizabeth Spiers to investigate and publish whatever it is that Shanley'd rather weren't investigated. Shanley either didn't have anything worth selling or didn't get how this works. I'm guessing the former. I don't think she's that stupid. She's basically just whining because she doesn't have a way out.

In a sense, she's got a point. It's terrible what journalists can do to people, and how little power you have to stop them. On the other hand, it couldn't have happened to a nicer person.

It takes a few seconds to load all tweets and settle down but otherwise works fine for me on Chrome. Maybe it's a matter of some execution limits?
